Senior Data Scientist

Preventing Money Laundering & Terrorist Financing is one of the key aspects for our society and our organisation, and as a bank we play a major role in this field. In order to be effective in fighting financial crime, we need smart individuals like yourself who get their energy from looking into data, patterns and behaviour of our customers to uncover illegal activities.

You and your job
You will be responsible for optimizing our current W&R (Wholesale & Rural) Transaction Monitoring (TM) system and ensuring it is future proof by introducing more advanced analytics methodologies. Our model is in ongoing development and new (computationally intensive) functionality is being added. For W&R FEC Tech, we strive to redesign our complete TM system following an existing set-up at Retail NL side (a Python based solution, including a data model, scoring model, and alert generation model). Your responsibility would be to contribute to the afore mentioned components for W&R and integrate them with the existing components in Retail NL. The challenge is not solely a technical assignment; working in the context of transaction monitoring requires you to thoroughly understand the functionality of the model, its components and the business.

Practical Examples
  • Build new functionality into our data model while continuing to combine all (30+) data sources required for Transaction Monitoring in a computationally efficient way. Our sources contain event data (e.g., transaction data and logging data) and enrichment data (e.g., customer data).
  • Increase the coverage of our detection model based on (newly) defined scenarios. You will examine the data, patterns and behaviour of our customers to uncover illegal activities related to risk scenarios, align with stakeholders on the results and implement the final solution into our detection model.
  • Ensure the model component design enables Rabobank to comply with all regulatory, audit and other internal requirements.
  • Set-up the model components to function as solid building blocks that can function on their own, and can be leveraged by other (FEC/TM) projects as well.
  • Ensure the computational performance of the Transaction Monitoring solution is sufficient for daily batch scoring and for one-off runs on multiple years of data.

Top 3 responsibilities:

  • Carry responsibility for (large parts of) our data science model(s), including model design, good quality code and supporting your medior and junior colleagues to use best practices and follow the same way of working across the entire team. You achieve this by working in a structured, precise way and by collaborating well with different people in various roles.
  • Lead alignment with adjacent fields (IT, Architecture) to realize robust road to production for our data science model(s).
  • Works on models that realize measurable impact (i.e. catch criminals), not necessarily to build the most complex advanced analytics models.

You and your talent:

  • Academic degree (MSc / PhD) in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics or any other related STEM field.
  • Software development skills such as Git, bash scripting and release management and proven success in bringing analytics models to production.
  • Can identify model improvements and provide statistically significant proof to justify implementation.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in advanced analytics / modelling / artificial intelligence activities working with large data sets.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Highly skilled in working with Python and PySpark.
  • Nice to have are: experience with Databricks, Azure DevOps and work experience within the financial services industry (experience in transaction monitoring or Financial & Economic crime is a plus).

This is what we offer you
