Legal Counsel

Samskip is looking for a passionate legal counsel for claims, legal contracts and corporate activities. In this position you will be part of a legal team in the dynamic world of transport. You will review and draft sales and other commercial contracts and advise on the legal risks. It is important that you can explain contract clauses in a practical and pragmatic way to Samskip colleagues and external parties and that you make sure that the best solution is found for Samskip that is commercially viable and legally correct. You will handle cargo claims and claims about damage to vessels or other damages, whereby you make sure the claim is handled professionally and quickly and in the best interests of Samskip. Further you will take care of issues in respect of corporate housekeeping, among other things assist in acquisition of companies, and insurance matters. The division of the various activities is roughly 50% contract review, 25% claims and 25% corporate housekeeping. You will act as a reliable legal partner and keep a constant eye on the company’s values, interests, and reputation. Independence and proactiveness is needed and a pragmatic approach in respect of solving problems. Samskip is a smaller international company which gives you the possibility to deal with various legal matters and liaise with various people on various management levels. In the legal team, which is based at the head office in Rotterdam, are 4 people and, in the tax, treasury and legal team are more than 16 people. Samskip is based in Rotterdam, but has offices worldwide. Your key responsibilities Review, draft and give legal advice on commercial contracts with customers, suppliers, business partners Handle, assess and settle claims regarding cargo, vessels or other damages. Work on successful recovery of claims at subcontractors. Provide legal guidance to colleagues in respect of complex claims, litigation, contracts, or other legal matters. Ensuring accurate follow-up of the claim and consultation with international insurance companies. Working with other departments and functions such as sales, finance, compliance etc. We are looking for A completed legal higher education, law study at university level is preferred. Minimum of 3 years’ experience in legal and claims, in the (maritime) transport sector. Competence in contract law and drafting (complex) commercial contracts Competence in corporate housekeeping under which experience with acquisition of companies Fluent in English, fluency in German or Spanish is a plus Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm. Ability to come up with practical and workable solutions for legal problems and be able to explain (complex) legal issues to non legal persons Good written and oral communication skills and empathetic Proven ability to manage priorities, organize projects and meet deadlines. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
